Every other resort in the East shuts down by mid-April. Killington keeps going. Here's when they'll finally call it this year.
Tap any year for details. The Beast rarely quits before May.
Month by month through the end of season
March is arguably the best month to ski Killington. The base is deep, the days are getting longer (especially after DST on March 8), and the weekend crowds thin out dramatically after school vacation weeks end.
153 of 164 trails are open right now. The terrain park is stacked. Afternoon temps creep above freezing, creating that perfect corn snow cycle: freeze overnight, soften by 10 AM, pure velvet by noon.
Killington has never closed in March (excluding COVID in 2020). In 25 years, it has never happened.
This is when Killington earns the "Beast of the East" name. Every other resort in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine is closed or limping along on a few trails. Killington is still running 5+ lifts with Superstar as the anchor.
The vibe shifts completely. T-shirts and shorts become acceptable ski attire. The K-1 Lodge patio turns into a full-on beach party. Pond Skim happens (April 11 this year). Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge (April 4).
In 25 years, Killington has only closed before April ended twice: 2007/08 (April 20) and 2011/12 (April 22). Both were historically bad snow years.
By May, it's down to Superstar and the K-1 Gondola. Sometimes the Canyon Quad. You're skiing one trail. And it's magnificent.
The snow is soft, the sun is warm, the crowd is small and entirely composed of people who genuinely love skiing. It feels like a secret club. You'll see bumps, slush, and bare spots. Nobody cares.
In 20 of the last 25 seasons (80%), Killington has been open in May. The median closing date across all 25 seasons is May 10. This is the norm, not the exception.
June skiing at Killington is rare but it happens. In 25 seasons, they've made it to June seven times: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024. When it happens, it's a single trail on Superstar, heavily patched with snowmaking remnants.
The June sessions tend to last 1-3 days max. Killington will push for that symbolic June 1 date when conditions allow. It's a point of pride.
If you ski Killington in June, you join a very small club. It's bragging rights for life.
